These meltwater lakes form on top of the ice. Some of them are hundreds or more feet deep. This is the most beautiful one I observed of many that I saw. Its shape almost looks like a teardrop from this angle, among the wide expanse of snow and ice surrounding it. Greenland (Kalaallit Nunaat), a newly autonomous nation within the Kingdom of Denmark, is the world’s largest island. More than 80% of its land surface is covered with ice.
