This Portfolio contains photographs of nature in the Polar Regions, both in the Arctic and Antarctic.  Most Arctic images are in the galleries for Thaw: An Arctic in Transition.

Flowers and grass are common in many coastal regions of the southern part of Greenland.  This image was obtained by a long hike along and unpaved road, and then a trail, from the nearest town, and past a World War II military remnant.   Greenland (Kalaallit Nunaat), an autonomous nation within the Kingdom of Denmark, is the world's largest island.  More than 80% of its land surface is covered with ice.

Some of them are hundreds or more feet deep.  This is the most beautiful one I observed of many that I saw.   Its shape almost looks like a teardrop from this angle, among the wide expanse of snow and ice surrounding it. These meltwater lakes form on top of the ice. Some of them are hundreds or more feet deep. This is the most beautiful one I observed of many that I saw.
